Trawling-gear.-Panels 5, 6, inclined so as to produce horizontal and d vertical spread of the mouth of the net 1 are secured by the lower rear angles to the ends of the upper bolt rope 2 of the net and the upper rear angles are connected together by a rope 9 parallel to the upper bolt rope to which there may be secured flexible sustaining-planes 20. These may have a central stiffening member. The towing ropes 18", 19" each have two branches; one is attached to a weight 11, 12 at the end of the lower bolt rope, to which also the forward lower corner of the panel is connected by a rope 13. This branch serves as the main tractive cable. The other branch 16, 17 is secured to the inner side of the panel. In place of the sustaining planes 20, triangular pieces of canvas may be secured to the inner surface of the net, the base of the triangle being attached to the upper bolt rope. The panels are provided with a number of floats, preferably glass vessels, held in chambers formed by planks secured to a wooden frame as described in Specification 210,439. Alternatively, the glass floats 81 may be held in place in the panel by washers 82 of wood held by wires as shown in Fig. 7. In order to permit easy handling of the gear and avoid twisting of the double branches of the towing cables, the main cable 60 is shackled to a swivel 68 which is either mounted directly on a spreader bar 63 or is connected to a looped rope 66 passing through eyes on the spreader bar, as shown in Fig. 6; the ends of this rope 66 being shackled to the double branch cables. It is thus easy to release the spreader bars and secure the cable 60 either to both branches or, if preferred, to the lower branch only for hauling the net aboard.
