Abstract

<PICT:0632594/III/1> An article, e.g. a shoe part, is provided with a temporary protective coating of a synthetic resinous material by forcing from a receptacle a cold, pasty composition comprising a suspension of the material in a liquid which is a solvent for it substantially only at elevated temperatures, along a conduit to a spray gun, the composition being heated after passing along the conduit to convert it into a free-flowing solution which is sprayed on the article. Cellulose derivatives, e.g. ethers, are included as synthetic resinous materials which also include polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinyl acetal (see Group IV (a)). Referring to Fig. 1, on pressing the trigger of the gun 35, part of the compressed air from 17 flows through the conduit 13 to force the composition out of the receptacle 9 through conduits 15 and 43 into the spray gun. The pressure generated by the force-feed unit 11 is of the order of 900 lbs./square inch. Compressed air also flows through filter 47 and valve <PICT:0632594/III/2> 49 to the gun. The composition passes along the passage 71 of the gun (Fig. 3) (see Group XXIX) where it is heated by the surrounding elements 83 and converted to a free-flowing solution which emerges from the nozzle 75 and is broken up into a spray by compressed air issuing from nozzle 87. Specifications 538,203 and 560,491 are referred to.ALSO:Compositions comprising a synthetic resin or cellulose derivative dispersed in a liquid which is a solvent for it substantially only at elevated temperatures are sprayed on to articles to form protective coatings. The compositions in the form of cold pastes are forced into a spray gun where they are converted by heat to free flowing solutions. Specified compositions are (1) polyvinyl alcohol, glycerine, ivory soap flakes and water; (2) polyvinyl butyral, triethylene glycol di-2-ethyl butyrate and acetone; (3) ethyl cellulose, dibutyl phthalate, hi-flash naphtha and isopropyl alcohol.
