Abstract
632,188. Making moulds for casting metal. McHARG, C. Dec. 19, 1946, No. 37421. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] In making moulds for casting turbine blades or other articles by the " lost-wax " process, the investment is removed from the flask before baking and, to enable this to be done, the base 13, Fig. 4, of the flask may be sparable from the wall 15. Both of these parts may be lined with wax and, after connecting together by hooks 14 and lugs 16, the joint may be sealed with wax. After investing, closing with a lid 18, Fig. 3, vibrating, e.g. by striking and pouring off any liquid, the investing mass 20, Fig. 4, is rigid enough to allow the wall 15 to be removed. The mass 20 is then dried, baked and lifted from the base 13. Aluminium or other light metal alloy may be used for making the flask. In a modification the wall 15 is divided longitudinally to facilitate removal. The investment may consist of 20 lbs. of solid, e.g. high alumina grog 72.5 per cent, silica flour 27.4 and magnesium oxide 0.1, and 0.6 gallons of liquid, e.g. methylated spirit 67 per cent, ethyl silicate 27, water 5 and 7.5 per cent solution of hydrochloric acid 1 per cent. The chemical analysis of the grog is SiO 2 50.60 per cent, AI 2 O, 41.36, CoO 0.35, Fe 2 O 3 6.56 and undetermined residue 1.13.
