Abstract

631,656. Drying by electric heating. FERRANTI, Ltd., and HUMBER, F. L. April 27, 1945, No. 10638. [Class 39(iii)] [Also in Group XIII] An electric heater used in the drying of hollow wet-moulded products, by internal heating by radiant heat and the passage of hot air, (see Group XIII) comprises a flat spiral of resistance wire or ribbon a, Fig. 1, constituting a radiant heater which is mounted on a porcelain or other refractory disc b with cement, asbestos tape or other fixing material. The disc b is mounted in one end of a hollow-walled tubular metal sheath d, the resistance a being connected to contact pins f carried by a refractory disc e which closes the other end of sheath d. Air admitted to the sheath d through an inlet i is heated and then ejected through an annular opening adjacent to the resistance heater a. In a modification, Fig. 3, a resistance spiral m is mounted on the base of a conical porcelain block j having a cavity k with an opening extending to the base through which pass connections from the resistance m to contact pins w protruding from the rear of the block j. A metal sheath o surrounds and is spaced from the block j to form an air space with an inlet p and an annular outlet, adjacent to the heating resistance m, for heated air.
