Abstract

630,802. Frequency measurements. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. April 23, 1947, No. 10868. Convention date, Sept. 2, 1944. [Class 37] [Also in Group XL (c)] In a mixing arrangement in which the signals to be mixed are applied respectively to the inner and outer grids of a multigrid valve, the outer grid is biassed so as to be conductive over part of the cycle and an impedance which is high at, the desired combination frequency is included in its circuit. The signal applied to the outer grid preferably consists of short periodic pulses. The impedance may comprise a tuned circuit (Fig. 1, not shown), or alternatively a network having an impedance which is substantially constant over a wide frequency range and comprises series resistance 13 and inductance 14 shunted by a condenser 15. The arrangement may be used to produce a wide range of frequencies by adjustment of the frequency of the signal 8 applied to the inner grid and by utilisation of the beats formed with the harmonics of the other signal. It may also be used for frequency measurement, the source 8 then comprising the unknown frequency. The term in the output due to beating with the nearest harmonic in the pulse train is selected by means of a low-pass filter in the anode circuit cutting-off at half the fundamental frequency of the pulse train, and is measured by known means such as comparison with a lowfrequency oscillator.
