Abstract
Porous refractory products are prepared by reacting finely divided silica powder, which is fine enough to pass through a sieve having 400 spaces per linear inch, with finely powdered calcium sulphate hemihydrate and a small amount of powdered flux, preferably an aluminosilicate such as feldspar or beryl, the insulating qualities of the product being preferably improved by the incorporation of combustible pore-forming materials in the composition. The calcium sulphate hemihydrate preferably comprises 10 per cent to 35 per cent, the flux 1 to 5 per cent and the combustible material, if present, 10-30 per cent by weight of the composition. The solid materials are mixed with sufficient water to render the mix fluid and placed in a suitable mould where the calcium sulphate sets, the solidified shape being then removed and dried, and fired to about 1400 DEG C. The combustible material is preferably sawdust, but pulverized nut-shells, ground coke or wood flour may be employed, porosity being obtained not only by burning out the combustible material but also by driving off the water of hydration and the volatile portion of the calcium sulphate.
