Abstract
629,500. Valve-gear. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd., BISHOP, J. L. H., and WEAVING, J. H. Nov. 8, 1947, No. 29775. [Class 7 (vi)] A valve-operating cam having an effective lifting portion DE is designed with an opening ramp CD, in which tappet clearance is taken up, consisting of a small accelerating portion OG on the lift curve, Fig. 5, followed by a portion GH obtained by plotting a sine curve on a sloping straight line. The ramp ends with a constant velocity portion HJ during which the valve begins to lift. The effect of the design is that at the end of the ramp the velocity of lift is kept very small. The cam is provided with a similar closing ramp EF. In Fig. 8 a valve P is operated by the cam through a tappet comprising telescoping parts N, R, urged apart by a spring S.
