Abstract

629,629. Valve-gear.. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd., and BISHOP, J. L. H. Feb. 24, 1947, No. 5270. [Class 7 (vi)] A valve-operating cam is designed so that the parts DE, EG, GH, Fig. 1, give an accelerating curve, Fig. 2, consisting of three half-period' sine waves DdE, EfG and GgH. The lift curve developed from the above acceleration curve, consists of portions corresponding to the parts DE and GH represented by an equation of the form y = -R sin mx. + nx i.e.. a negative sine wave combined with an ascending straight line and a portion corresponding to EG which is a halfperiod sine wave. Constant velocity ramps CD, and HJ may be provided at the ends of the operative part of the cam to take up the clearance. To allow for compression in the push rods during the acceleration periods DE and GH, and expansion of the rods in the parts EG, the amplitudes of the negative sine waves in the parts DE and GH and the positive sine wave in the part EG may be reduced.
