Abstract
Radio-active units are manufactured by forming a homogeneous mixture of finely-comminuted radioactive substance and metal carrier, pressing to a compact, and then heating to a temperature below the melting point of the carrier. In an example, radium-barium sulphides and carbon monoxide reduced copper are ground together and reduced in hydrogen at 300 DEG C. for 2 hours. A high pressure is applied and the compact formed is sintered in a furnace in a protective atmosphere of hydrogen, the temperature being slowly raised to 950 DEG C. The compact is hammered and then conditioned to sheets or wires of the required dimensions, the latter not exceeding the maximum depth of penetration of alpha rays in the copper. Carrier metals specified are copper, steel, nickel, tungsten, silver and gold.ALSO:Milk is sterilized by contact with sheets prepared (see Group III) from a mixture of comminuted radioactive substance and metal carrier.
