[Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] A transformer, having variable coupling and intended primarily for a remote control system, has a movable armature, so shaped in relation to the pole-pieces that a graduated A.C. output is obtained through large angles of displacement from the central position, and in a sense dependent on the direction of movement from that position. A three-limbed core 1 carries a winding on its centre limb 4 supplied with A.C. and windings on its outer limbs 5, 6 connected in opposition to output leads 7, 7<1>. Two arcuate armatures 8, 9 of graduated width are mounted on a non-magnetic support 10 pivoted at 11 and are arranged to come between poles 4, 6 and 4, 5 respectively, when rotated. In the neutral position shown, voltages induced in the output windings are a minimum and are balanced, so that there is no output. The presence of an armature between two poles increases the output from the corresponding side while the opposing output decreases, the resultant output depending on the extent of the movement.
