Abstract

628,704. Tubular heat-exchange elements. WELLINGTON TUBE WORKS, Ltd., and ROWAN, H. C. Oct. 3, 1947, No. 26635. [Class 64(iii)] In a gilled metal tube of the type in which the gills are interconnected at their ends to form a box-like structure, the gills a are of rectangular form and have their opposite ends bent over to form parallel flanges d extending from the same side of the gill, the end portions of each flange being offset outwardly by a distance corresponding to the thickness of the flange. The gills are threaded on to a tube c so that the offset portion of each flange overlaps the adjacent gill. The end gill e is formed with short reversed flanges f which lie inside the shortened offset flange portions of the penultimate gill. The end gills may be secured to the tube by welding or by expanding the tube and the whole assembly may be metal coated e.g. by galvanising or tinning. To strengthen the assembly, the overlapping flanges may be spotwelded together at suitable points, e.g. at the corners of the structure.
