Abstract
Insecticides which may be used as substitutes for nicotine are provided by heating a liquid glyceride of a fatty acid with sulphur, adding sulphonated castor oil to the resulting sulphurised glyceride, saponifying the mixture and adding a small proportion of nitrobenzene thereto. The glyceride may be castor or grape-seed oil and the glyceride may be heated with the sulphur until a sample remains clear on cooling. The proportion of sulphur may be of the order of 5 grains per 100 cc. of glyceride and the proportion of sulphonated castor oil may be of the order of 20 per cent. of the sulphurised glyceride. The saponification may be carried out with an alcoholic solution of caustic potash or soda in which butyl, isobutyl, amyl or a higher alcohol or a mixture of two or more such alcohols may be present. The saponification may be continued until the product is soluble in water and the proportion of nitrobenzene added may be of the order of 0.5 per cent. by volume. In the example given, a mixture of 100 cc. of amyl alcohol and 300 cc. of methylated spirit containing 6.66 per cent. of commercial caustic potash is added to a mixture of 500 cc. of a solution of sulphur in grape-seed oil (5 grains per 100 cc.) and 100 cc. of sulphonated castor oil and the product allowed to stand for a few hours until it is soluble in water, heating if necessary. 5 cc. of nitrobenzene are then added.
