Abstract

627,450. Veneer cutting lathes; drivers. ABBEY, A. (Aktiebolaget Siefvert & Fornander). June 10, 1947, No. 15306. [Class 83 (iii)] In a process and lathe for peeling veneer, two driving claws 3, 5 of different radial extensions are used to engage the driven end of the log, the one of greater radial extension, 5, being withdrawn to an idle position during the peeling operation before the peeling knife 21 reaches that circumference to which the said claw extends, the peeling operation then continuing to a smaller radius than that of the claw 5. In the arrangement shown, 3 is the fixed claw, the auxiliary claw 5 being rigidly mounted and axially but not rotatably displaceable along guides 6 with respect to the driving spindle 1. As the peeling knife 21 approaches the limits of the claw 5, at a pre-determined position, the step 24 on the slide 23 actuates the pin 20, lever 19, rack 18 and gear rim 16 to rotate the sleeve 14. This sleeve has no axial motion in the housing 2 and is provided with a helical slot 13 through which project two diametricallyopposed pins 12 of the driving-ring 10. The ring 10 also has an inward flange 11 engaging a groove 9 in the bush 7, which bush, together with the driving claws 5 are prevented from rotating with respect to the spindle 1 by means of a ring 8 fixed to the spindle between the claws and the bush. Thus actuation of the gear rim 16 rotates the sleeve 14 which in turn causes the pins 12 to move along the slots 15 in the housing 2 and thus move the ring 10, bush 7 and claw 5 all axially of the driving spindle and away from the log. Alternatively the slide 23 may have a stop-member actuating the rack 18 in one direction only to withdraw the claw 5-the reverse movement of the sleeve 14 being performed by suitable hand actuating means. Further, the motion of the claw 5 towards and away from the log may be produced by connecting the claw to a nut co-operating with a rotatable but not displaceable screw. When the distance between the fixed claw 3 and the spindle head is sufficiently great, a wholly or semi-automatic or a wholly hand operated device for displacing the auxiliary claw 5 may be mounted on the outside of the spindle head.
