Abstract
541,801. Turning projectiles. HEPBURN, J. T. Feb. 23, 1940, No. 8724/41. Divided out of 541,777. [Class 83 (iii)] A shell-turning lathe has a longitudinally movable saddle with a mechanical drive, including a clutch, for moving the saddle towards the headstock and fluid pressure means for retracting the saddle the clutch being engaged to complete the mechanical drive by fluid pressure means which are automatically actuated to disengage the clutch when fluid pressure is applied to the means for retracting the saddle. The shell is mounted between an expanding driver and a tailstock in the manner described in Specification 541,777. A shaft 50 driven by a chain 49 is connected through worm gearing 51 and clutch 54 to a shaft 53 connected by gears 60, 61 to a rack 62 on the saddle. The clutch is operated by a fluid pressure cylinder 58. Return movement of the saddle is effected by a cylinder 63 after disengagement of the clutch. In operation, after positioning the shell a foot valve 76 is operated to admit air to lines 78, 79 to grip the work. A switch 80 is then pressed to start the spindle driving mechanism (not shown). Connected to the main air line is a valve 81 having a foot-controlled bleeder valve 83 which allows air flow to lines 84...87. This engages the clutch 54 and starts the mechanical saddle feed. At the same time the cylinder 44 is actuated (line 85) to impart cross feed to the tools, the wedges 47, 48, ensuring a gradual approach. At a predetermined point the saddle engages a valve 88 which allows air flow to cylinders 67 to feed the cutting-off tools as described in Specification 541,799. When the saddle completes its movement it actuates a valve 92 which directs pressure to line 93 thus disengaging the clutch 54, and, through delay valve 95, actuating the cylinder 63 to withdraw the saddle. At the end of the operation, valve 77 is actuated to admit pressure to line 100 to withdraw the tailstock and disengage the driver. Specifications 541,800 and 541,802 also are referred to.
