[Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXIV] A rolling-mill comprises a main housing 10, a roll housing 16 mounted therein, vertical rolls 28 adjustable horizontally, a pair of intermeshing pinions 34 beneath the rolls and spaced therefrom, and a pair of upright spindles universally connected at their lower ends to the respective pinions 34, and is characterized in that a carrier 50 is mounted in the main housing 10 beneath the roll housing 16, a pair of bearings 63 is slidable horizontally in the carrier beneath the respective rolls 28, and a coupling element 67 is mounted within each bearing 63 for rotation about a vertical axis, the elements being connected to the lower ends of the rolls to drive the same and universally connected (see Group XXIV) to the upper ends of the spindles to be driven thereby. To bring a different set of roll grooves into the pass line, the rectangular frame-shaped carrier 50, carrying the roll housing 16, is adjusted vertically by means of the screws 54, worm-gears 55 and worm shaft 58, operated by a reversible electric motor 59. During this vertical movement the coupling members 67 will slide up or down over members 79. The roll housing 16 stands on feet 65 which engage flanges 64 of the bearings 63, thereby holding the bearings against vibration, and is releasably secured to the carrier 50 by loosely-fitting pins 95 which prevent the carrier 50 from being moved downward away from the roll housing before a clamp 23, which secures the housing in its adjusted position, is loosened. Removable main housing caps 12 permit the rolls to be easily changed. The gear housing 33 is protected from ingress of water and scale by a cover-plate 86 and caps 90.
