Claims priority, application Germany February 19, 1953 2 Claims. (Cl. 80-55) The present invention relates to a rolling mill involving vertical rolls mounted in a standard and driven by an electric motor through shafts, pinions and driving back gears.
Rolling mills having vertically disposed rolls driven from above are known in which the roll stand proper is incorporated in a tall housing on which are disposed the driving elements, in particular the pinion stand, driving back gears and occasionally also the driving motor. Further, rolling mills of particularly heavy construction are known in which the roll stand is secured to one side of a tall and freely cantilevered housing standard on which are disposed also the pinions and gears, whilst the motor is mounted on the mill floor and drives the gear via vertical or slanted shafts and bevel gears, All of these and other known constructions have the disadvantage of a particularly heavy construction for receiving the stands and driving elements. They have to safely accommodate the weights of these machine parts and the live forces arising from the rolling operation. The costs of the rolling mills and of their erection thereby are very much increased. Thesedisadvantages are apparent at an increased extent in constructions having axially movable stands or stand change frames, as the elements for guiding and clamping the stands require complicated constructions in which an axial movement porting said housing in association with columns disposed on that side of the standard which is remote from the structure.
Such design permits to save considerable weight in comparison with conventional designs, in particular as regards the otherwise required tall and freely cantilevered housings or housing standards, and further permits to dispose the traction device for the axial movement of the roll stand on the drive housing. In such rolling mills, in which the roll stand (which in the main comprises the standard and rolls) is vertically movable, the solid carrier structure suitably comprises a vertical bedplate on the side adjacent to the roll stand, and the supporting columns comprise faces for guiding and clamping the roll-standard crowns. Said bedplate is adapted to receive clamping means to clamp the roll stand in any desired elevation. To such end, movable wedges may suitably be provided which, for example, are engaged in grooves of the standards by means of worm gears and screw connections and press these standards against the sliding and supporting faces of the vertical bedplate. In such case it is very advantageous to provide the supporting columns with gibs for guiding the vertically movable roll stands, the latter being guided in the crown of the stands. The complete roll stand thus is ice guided on all sides and quickly clampable at any elevation.
One form of the present invention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 4 illustrates an elevation in the direction of the arrow R in Fig. l.
Numeral 1 designates a concrete foundation comprising a pit 2 and a pedestal 5 provided with hollow spaces 3 and 4. Pedestal 5 forms a solid support in which are anchored two horizontal parallel box girders 6 of which the free ends bear on columns 7 which in their turn are supported on both sides of a horizontal bedplate 8 anchored to the bottom of pit 2. In foundation 1 and in pedestal 5 also is anchored a vertical bedplate 9 which rests on bedplate 8 and is secured thereto by means of screws.
On the two columns 7 and on the vertical bedplate 9 are provided pairs of guiding faces 10 and 11 respectively, for a vertically movable standard 12, said faces being parallel to the longitudinal median plane of the rollingmill. In the upper and lower frame portions of the latter are movable, in conventional manner, the bearings 13 for the two vertical rolls 14. The latter may be pushed against each other by an electric motor 15 which acts on the bearing elements of the crown-sidev roll 14 through transmission gears 16, 17 and the screw spindles 18, said gears being incorporatedin the stand crown.
On standard 12 and vertical bedplate 9 are provided faces 19, 20 normal to the longitudinal median plane of 28 fixed to the upper ends of the shafts 22. By forcing a fluid into the cylinder space between the two pistonsv 26, the gibs 23 are pressed on to the faces 20 of the standard which then bears on the faces 19 of bedplate 9 and thus is clamped in situ.
For locking the standard 12 during operation, furthermore wedge pins 30 are movably, but non-rotatably, mounted in the boxlike side portions 29 of bedplate 9. The pins 30 are engaged in vertical grooves 31 provided on both sides of standard 12. Each of said grooves comprises a vertical inclined face 32 against which may be pressed the wedge faces of the four pins 30 engaged in said groove. The pins 30 in their exterior portions for such purpose are formed as screw spindles which cooperate with axially immovable nuts which are formed as worm-wheels and are disposed in the housings 33. The appurtenant worms are operatively connected to one or the other of two vertical shafts 34 which are rotatable by means of small electric motors 35.
The rolls are detachably connected, in a manner known per se, by means of couplings 36 to inclined shafts 37 and the upper ends 38 of the latter may move and swivel in pinions 39. For drivingly connecting the rolls 14 to the large electric motor 40 there are further provided back gears 41 having two pairs of gearwheels, a vertical shaft 42 passing through the hollow space 4, a bevel gearing 43 disposed in hollow space 3 and of which the housing is generally designated by 44, and a horizontal shaft 45. The pinion pair 39 and the back gears 41 as well as vertical shaft 42 are disposed, in accordance supports said housing 46,- 47 in asshr'c'iatiori witli'thecolumns 7 disposed on that side of standard 12 whichis' remote from pedestal 5. In place at the foundation pedestal may be provided any other solid supporting structure. V
For the purpose of vertically moving the roll stand which in the main comprises the standard 12 and the rolls 14, there is provided a lifting device. comprises two carrier rods 48 extending on both sides beside the pinions 3? and the back gears 41 and beybn'd the housing 46, 47 and driving mechanisms therefor disposed on the upper housing portion 47. Said mechanisms are constructed similarly to those for the key pins 30; the upper ends, formed as screw spindles, of the twe carrier rods 48 are operatively connected via wormwheels disposed in the housings 49 to the worm shaft 51 which is rotatable by the auxiliary motor 50. The lower and' fork'ed ends 52 of said carrier rods are pivotably and d'etachably' connected by means of plug pins 53 td a carrier frame 54 which in turn by means of pins 55 is connected to upwardly projecting lug pairs 56 of standard 12. v p
The horizontal bedpl ate 8 is formed as ways on which is'jguideda slide 57. On the latter may be set down the roll stand 12, 14 and moved away from the vertical bedplate 9 between the columns 7 after disconnecting the rolls 14 from the inclined shafts 37 on one hand and the standard 12 from the carrier rods 48 on the other hand and after 'swiv'elling-out the clamping gibs 23. 2. A toning mill as defined in claim 1 wherein said g'ibs are disposed on vertical shafts mounted to the side of said columns remote from; said vertical bed plate, and
means are provided to swivel out said gibs by manipulation of said shafts.
