Abstract

A magnetic core consists of a ferromagnetic mixed ferrite having a specific resistance of at least 1000 ohms-cm. cube which exhibits a homogeneous cubic crystal structure and an initial permeability of at least 60 and a loss factor less than 0.06 throughout the frequency range of 10 to 100 kc/sec. For these properties the ferrite must be fully oxidized and the oxygen loss occurring on heating during its preparation, is minimised by using as low a formation temperature as possible and oxygen is replaced by heating and cooling slowly in oxygen. To facilitate this the ferrite should be fine grained and porous. The ferrite may be produced by heating together a mixture of oxides in a fine state produced by prolonged grinding or by precipitation from a solution, and pressed into a core before or after heating. Methods are described, with appropriate proportions and details of treatment, for producing by the grinding method copper-cadmium ferrite, copper-zinc ferrite, magnesium-zinc ferrite and nickel-zine ferrite and for producing copper-zinc ferrite by the precipitation method. Curves show the relationship between frequency and tan d of a coil wound on a specified annular ferrite cores and permeabilities are stated.
