Description

J. G. HALL. GHALK LNEHOLDER. APPLIGATION FILED SEPTA, 1909.
Patented Jan. 18, 1910.
w22/f4. @g55 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES G. I-IALL, OF OFALLON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO J. A. SAULS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CHALK-LINE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 18, 1910.
Application led September 1, 1909. Serial No. 515,713.
To all whom Lt may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES Gr. HALL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of OFallon, St. Clair county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chalk-Line Holders, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to improvements in chalk line holders for which Letters Patent #927,7 90 were issued to me on July 13, 1909 and has for its object the construction of a chalk line holder in which there is a means for stretching the line after it has been positioned manually.
A further object of the invention is to provide a square for the holders arranged to accurately position the holders relative to the work A further object of my invention is to provide a level for the chalk line holder.
For the above purposes my invention consists in cert-ain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanyingy drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a section of masonry showing my improved holders and a chalk line in position thereon; Fig. 2 is a plan of a section of masonry showing my improved holders and line in position thereon; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional plan of one of the line holders with a section of line positioned therein; Fig. 4L is a rear face view of the line holder partly in section illustrating a portion of the line in position therein; and, Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional elevation taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing: 1 designates the body portion of the holder and formed integral therewith is a handle 2. Formed integral with the body portion 1 is a lateral projection 3 having flanges 4 which are formed at right angles to the face 5 of the upper and lower walls of the body portion 1. A conical bearing 6 is formed in the projection 3 and openings 7 are formed in the walls of the projection 3 through which the line 8 is threaded. A tapering key 9, having an opening 10 through which the line 8 is inserted and a flattened end 11, which key coacts with the conical bearing 6 as a means toward tightening the line between the holders which is accomplished by grasping the fiattened end 11 0f the key and turning same in the conical bearing 6 and partially winding` the line 8 on the key 9, the key being held in the conical bearing frictionally. Each holder 1 is provided with a spirit level 12, which is preferably positioned on the bottom face of the upper wall ofthe body portion 1 adjacent the lateral projection 3, and is provided for the accurate leveling of the line. It is to be understood in this connection that the level is applied to the holder at each end of the line, and when positioned on the work each line holder is held in a horizontal plane which is ascertained by the spirit level and the line is then drawn tight between the levels, thus assuring a perfectly level working line. A square or straight edge 13 is mounted in the angular depressions 14: formed in the faces 5 of the walls of the body portion 1 and a slot 15 is extended longitudinally of the straight edge for a considerable distance of its length. To secure the square to the body portion a bolt 16, having an angular head 17 is employed, which head conforms to the slot 15, and the opposite end of the bolt is threaded and arranged to receive a winged nut 18 which engages the body portion. A scale 19 is provided on the face of each straight edge 13 and is employed for the proper positioning of the holder and line as for instance in shingling, the square being held while the holder is advanced along the square a certain predetermined distance as for instance in shingling, four inches to give the proper exposure to the weather for the next layer of shingles. The rear faces of the straight edge is provided with notches 20 through which the line 8 passes so that the straight edge does not interfere with the perfect alining of the line.
In practical operation the device is commonly operated by two operators one at each end of the work and the position of the holders relative to the work is readily ascertained by the spirit levels, and when the same are in a horizontal plane the line is drawn manually and if necessary further drawn taut by a manipulation of the keys 9 and held taut by the keys. Thus a perfectly straight and level lint.` is obtained in Work such as masonry.
Then the device is employed ivhere it is desired to change the position of the line to certain predetermined spacing the holders are moved relative to the scale on the tace of the straight edges.
I claim:
1. A line holder, comprising a body portion, a right angled eXtensionfi-oin the body portion, a spirit level in the body portion and means for securing a line Within the body portion.
2. In a line holder, a body portion, means for securing a line Within the body portion, and a straight edge arranged at right angles to the body portion.
3. In a line holder, a body portion, means for holding a line Within the body portion, a straight edge arranged atright angles to the body portion and means for adjusting the straight edge relative to the body portion.
4. In a line holder, a body portion, a right angled extension from the body portion, a conical bearing in the right angled evtension` a key seated in the conical bearr ing for holding and drawing up the line and a straight edge carried by the body portion.
5. The combination With a line, of a pair of holders, each of which holders comprises a body portion, a right angled extension to the body portion, a spirit level carried by the body portion, means for securing the line to the holder, Which means may be moved to tighten the line,
6. In combination with a line, a pair of line holders, each of which comprises a body portion provided With a handle, a right angled extension formed integral with the body portion, a spirit level carried by the holder, means for adjusting the line relative to the holder, a straight edge carried by the holder and means for adjusting the straight edge relative to the holder.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my naine to this specification, in presence ot two subscribing Witnesses.
lVitnesses EDWARD E. LONGAN,
HELEN S. DAUGHERTY.
