Abstract

626,804. Electric water heaters. HARBRIX INDUSTRIES, Ltd., HARDIE, J. P., and SCARISBRICK, R. F. July 21, 1947, No. 19413. [Class 39(iii)] An electric liquid heater comprises a chamber 26 having an inlet 24a, an outlet 27, and a number of laminar, individually insulated resistance heating units 36 closely spaced to one another and to the walls of the chamber 26. The heating units 36 are in two groups, each of which is secured to an opposite wall of the chamber 26 whereby each unit is disposed between two opposite units in interleaved manner. Each unit 36 consists of a nickel-chrome resistance wound on a mica former and covered by a mica plate on each side, the unit being completed by a copper sheath. Water enters the casing 11 at 13a and, when a spindle 17 is withdrawn, forces a piston head 23 against a spring 17b in the spindle, to open the valve 23 to flow through the chamber 26 to the outlet 27. Water pressure acts on a diaphragm 42 to cause a piston 44 to tilt a mercury switch 39 to energise the series connected heaters 36. A lamp 47, observed through a window 50, and a fuse 49 are shunted across the heaters 36.
