Abstract
943,027. Electric continuous-flow water heaters. A. ECKERFELD. Sept. 20, 1960 [Sept. 29, 1959], No. 32245/60. Addition to 905,123. Heading H5H. A continuous-flow water heater as described in the parent Specification, is modified in that the base body, instead of being fixed to a separate back wall, itself forms the back wall of the apparatus and supports a cover for the apparatus. The apparatus is shown with the cover removed from the base body 1 of insulating material which has an inlet socket 2 and two discharge sockets 3 and 4 at its lower side and also supports the other components of the apparatus. Two diaphragm switches 6 and 7 respond to a pressure difference on flow of water through the apparatus and actuate electric switches 8 and 9 through bell-cranks. Two attachment bodies 12 and 13 each comprise three communicating heating channels containing coiled filaments and a diaphragm switch connected to a safety switch. Electric terminals T are mounted on the lower portion of the body 1. An inlet channel 18 leads from socket 2 to a hole 19 communicating with an over-pressure chamber of the diaphragm switch 6. A transverse channel 21 leads from hole 19 to a corresponding hole communicating with an over-pressure chamber of diaphragm switch 7 and with a channel 24 which communicates with two of the heating channels of each attachment body 12 and 13. The third heating channel of body 13 is connected to a channel 26 leading to the top of the apparatus where it communicates with a low-pressure chamber of diaphragm switch 7 and then back to discharge socket 4. The third heating channel of body 12 is connected by a channel 28 to discharge socket 3 and communicates with a low-pressure chamber of diaphragm switch 6 via a connecting pipe 30. The filaments of body 13 are energized by switch 9 as soon as water flows through the body 13 and channel 26 to discharge socket 4 to operate diaphragm switch 7. Similarly the filaments of body 12 are energized by switch 8 when water flows through body 12 and channel 28 to discharge socket 3 to operate diaphragm switch 6. The operating contact of each switch 8 or 9 is however connected in series with an open contact of the other switch so that not all the filaments of the apparatus can be in operation at the same time, thus preventing overloading. The safety switch is normally locked in its closed position, but is opened by either of the diaphragm switches in the bodies 12 or 13 if the pressure in the heating channels suddenly rises owing to the formation of vapour, and can then be reset manually.
