Abstract

626,678. Batteries. CONCORDIA ELECTRIC SAFETY LAMP CO., Ltd., and CORNISH, J. P. Dec. 10, 1946, No. 36414. [Class 53] A battery casing 1 which encloses all the components of the battery is provided with two covers 9, 11, the lower cover seating on the casing as shown at 40 and enclosing the terminals and stoppers, the upper cover seating-on the cover 9 and providing a chamber 12 enclosing fuses 17 and terminals 13 for the leads 15. Gases evolved from the battery escape through the joint 40. The lid 4 which supports the terminals, stoppers, &c., may be secured to the casing by welding, the covers 9, 11 being clamped together and to the casing by bracket means 22 and a magnetic 'look. The casing, partitions 2, lid 4 and covers 9, 11 may be moulded from polyethylene and the terminals 5, 13, and stoppers 6 may be moulded into the covers or secured by screws and nuts as shown. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of a battery showing a single cell comprising negative plates 27 and positive plates 3 held in place by ribs 24 on the casing and separated by polyethylene plates 19 which are perforated and provided with ribs 21. The lower ends of the plates 27 and separators 19 rest on a bar 26 as shown in Fig. 4, the positive plates having lugs 30 which enter recesses 29 in the bar and support the plates above the bar.
