[Class 37] [Also in Group XXXVIII] A variable capacitor comprises a hollow walled cup-shaped vessel having electrodes 6, 7 on its inner and outer walls 1, 2 respectively. Between the inner and outer walls, the vessel contains a quantity of liquid 5, the level of which masks the electrodes 6, 7 to a varying degree dependent upon a variable gas pressure applied to the liquid 5 through a tube 3 rising from the hollow base of the vessel. A second variable gas pressure may be applied to that surface of the liquid that is disposed between the walls 1, 2. For dielectric liquids the electrodes 6, 7 are applied to either the inner or the outer surfaces of the walls of the vessel to provide a simple variable capacitor. For electrically-conductive liquids, however, the electrodes 6; 7 are applied to the outer surfaces of the walls 1, 2 of the vessel, electrical connections 8, 9, 10 being made to the electrodes 6, 7 and the liquid 5 for providing two variable capacitors in parallel.
