Abstract

1,213,128. Monitoring fluid level electrically. C.I.A. ELLIS. Jan. 10, 1968 [Jan. 24, 1967], No.3514/67. Heading G1H. The capacitance values of first and second pairs of electrodes 10, 12 and 10, 14, Fig.3, are equal when a fluid level 18 (or the interface level between a pair of fluids) is located either below or above the position of the electrodes, but become unequal when the level registers with either one of the pairs or the space between. The capacitors C1, C2, Fig. 2, formed by the electrodes are connected in a bridge circuit to determine the feedback between the input and output of an amplifier A by way of a transformer L, Lc, the arrangement being such feedback occures to produce oscillation in the amplifier loop only when the bridge circuit is unbalanced. Thus, the production of oscillation indicates that the liquid or interface level occurs within the predetermined region of container 16, Fig. 3, occupied by the electrodes. A detecting and amplifying circuit may respond to the oscillations to actuate a visual or aural alarm. The electrodes may be mounted inside tube 16, and at least one may be coated with an insulating material which has no chemical reaction with the fluid in the tube. Where the tube is made of conductive material it may form electrode 10. Balancing capacitors may be connected across each of capacitors C1 and C2. In an alternative circuit arrangement, Fig. 1 (not shown), the two capacitors form the feedback connection from a phase-splitter at the output of the amplifier to the input. The term "fluid" is intended to embrace dry powders, sherries and suspensions as well as liquids.
