Abstract
625,839. Ground anchors. McALPINE, SIR M., and TOWNEND, W. T. Sept. 23. 1946, No. 28466. [Class 45] [Also in Groups X and XIV] A pole for supporting cables or for use in scaffolding or for supporting staging consists of a tubular mast built up from three metal tubes 10, 10A, 10B welded together, and a base comprising a socket tube 12 in which the mast is a sliding fit, three independently extensible legs each consisting of two tubes 15, 16, and a pin 32 for locking the mast to the socket. To erect the pole the mast is inserted in the socket with its lower end in contact with the ground and is raised vertically about this end, the legs are adjusted and fixed in position, the end of the mast, which is still resting on the ground, is then raised, by inserting a rod through a hole in its lower end, sufficiently to allow a ram to be positioned beneath the mast, and the ram is then raised by rope tackles until the pin 32 can be inserted through coincident holes in the socket and mast. The rope tackle passes through eyes 33 and eyes on the base of the ram. The foot of each tube 16 is pivotally mounted to a plate 18 which may be fixed to the ground by a screw picket 19. The upper end of each tube 16 may be pivotally connected by means of a tie 20 to a collar 25, slidably mounted on the socket. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the ties may be replaced by lugs which extend above the tubes 15 and are shaped to bear against the upper end portion of the socket.
