Abstract
625,585. Electrodeposition of iron, nickel, and cobalt. WATSON, F. (Reymersholms Gamla Industri Aktiebolag). Dec. 17, 1946, No. 37148. [Class 41] Pure iron, or nickel or cobalt, or a moulding thereof is deposited by the continuous electrolysis of a solution obtained by dissolving in formic acid in a dissolving vessel starting material containing the desired metal, e.g. carbonates, hydroxides or metal products rich in oxygen (metal fines), the electrolyte being continuously enriched in metallic ions by returning it to the dissolving vessel. The acidity and/or speed of circulation employed is selected to provide 12-16 grams of the metal per litre of the electrolyte with a pH value between 5.8 and 6.0. The current density is between' 150 to 350 A/m<SP>2</SP> and preferably 350 A/m<SP>2</SP> with a spacing between the electrodes of 21 to 25 millimeters and preferably 21 millimeters. The temperature of the bath is between 30-35‹ C. Alternating current may be superimposed on the electrodes or pulsating direct current may be employed. A rotary cathode may be employed for the production of thick electro-deposited layers ; the speed is suitably of the order of 50-60 r.p.m.
