Abstract
624,896. Television receivers. IBBOTSON, H. Feb. 20, 1947, No. 4920. [Class 40 (iii)] A viewing unit adapted to be connected by cable to a television receiver located at a distance therefrom comprises a cabinet containing a cathode-ray tube arranged with its axis vertical, the screen being at the lower end, and a mirror located beneath the screen arranged to reflect images produced on the screen to the exterior of the cabinet. As shown in Fig. 1, the cabinet 1 comprises an upper and lower portion 2, 3 respectively, divided by a partition 4 apertured at 5 for the screen end of the cathode-ray tube 6, the neck 8 of which extends upwardly into an extension 9 of the upper cabinet portion 2, the extensions being of reduced width, with reference to the cabinet proper when viewed from the front of the cabinet, and designed to reduce the apparent height of the cabinet and to simulate a useful or ornamental object, e.g. an electric clock. The images produced on the screen 7 of the cathode-ray tube are viewed through a window formed by a lens 16 (preferably of plastic material) by means of a mirror 11 the inclination about the pivot 12 of which may be varied by means of a cam 13 controlled by a knob 15 (Fig. 3) external to the cabinet, a link 19 connecting the mirror to a narrow rectangular mask 17 pivoted at 18 serving to vary the angle of direct vision of the screen 7 as the mirror inclination is varied. Accompanying sound signals are reproduced by two loud-speakers 21, 22 supported, with the magnetic system 24 remote from the tube, by baffle plates 23 disposed tangentially to the conical surface of the bulb portion of the cathode-ray tube in the upper cabinet portion 2, the front and side walls of which are formed of a fabric or gauze screen 25. The neck 8 of the tube is provided with a first collar 29 carrying, on its outer surface, contacts 30 which are connected to the tube contact pins and a second removable collar 28 carrying contacts 27 extending down its inner surface and adapted to engage the contacts 30, when the collar 28 is positioned as shown in the drawing, the upper edges of both collars being substantially flush with the end of the neck 8. A multi-core cable 26 connects the cathode-ray tube and loud-speakers with the appropriate parts of the receiving apparatus 31... 38.
