Abstract

An ester gum is reinforced by polythene by mixing the gum or a material from which it is made, with the polythene while they are in a mobile condition and then casting, moulding or otherwise shaping the mixture to a desired form and converting it to a solid condition. In an example, 60 parts by weight of colophony ester resin is heated with 40 parts by weight of polythene and the mixture stirred to produce an emulsion. 17.5 parts of diethyl hexyl phthalate is added to give a product which may be sprayed or otherwise applied as a protective coating to machined parts. Colouring matter may also be added. The Provisional Specification describes also a similar composition in which the gum is colophony.
