Abstract

Epoxide resin compositions which cure rapidly on heating to tough, adherent, heatresistant products and are suitable for use as adhesives, moulding resins, coating compositions and impregnants, consist of a mixture of an epoxy polyether of a polyhydroxy compound, a polycarboxylic acid anhydride and not less than 0.05 per cent by weight of the resin, of a sulphur-bearing organic rubber vulcanization accelerator, e.g. benzyl disulphide, di-tert.-butyl disulphide, n-butyl disulphide, iso-butyl disulphide, dipentamethylene thiuram tetrasulphide, diphenylthiourea, the zinc salt of mercaptobenzothiazole, dibutylxanthic disulphide, tetraethyl thiuram monosulphide and disulphide, benzothiazyl disulphide, activated dithiocarbamate, Zn-diethyldithiocarbamate. A mixture of 100 parts epoxide resin, 10 parts phthalic anhydride and 0.675 parts tetraethyl thiuram disulphide on heating gelled in 13 minutes. Tables are given of the various accelerators and the gelling times and hardness of the product obtained for various weights of accelerator. Epoxidized unsaturated oils, butadiene polymers or their epoxidized derivatives, crotonic or acrylic acids; wood flour, carbon black, clay, glass fibres, asbestos, mica, chlorinated diphenyls may be added to the mixture. Maleic anhydride or tetrapropenyl succinic anhydride may be used instead of phthalic anhydride. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 730,670.
