Abstract

A curable composition comprises a monomeric polyepoxide having at least one oxirane oxygen atom bonded to vicinal cycloaliphatic carbon atoms, a polycarboxylic acid compound, to provide 0.16 to 5.0 carboxy groups per epoxy group, and a monomeric ethylenically unsaturated compound with no functional groups other than its double bonds, at least one ingredient in addition to the monomeric ethylenically unsaturated compound having at least one copolymerizable ethylenic group. The monomeric ethylenically unsaturated compound provides .002 to 5.0 ethylenic double bonds per ethylenic double bond in the other ingredients. Lists of suitable ingredients of the compositions are given. If desired, polyols, and acid or basic catalysts, and free radical generators such as peroxides and metallic activators may be included in the compositions. Lists of their optional additives and of inert solvents which may be added are also given. Many specific examples are given. In a typical one, Example 2, 6-methyl-3,4-epoxycyclohexyl-methyl - 6 - methyl - 3,4 - epoxycyclohexanecarboxylate is mixed with maleic anhydride and heated. After cooling styrene, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (solution in dimethyl phthalate) and cobalt naphthenate were added. The mixture gelled in 5 minutes at 25 DEG C.
