Abstract
Acetylene is separated and recovered from moist gas mixtures by cooling the mixture to between 0-40 DEG C. in the presence of a water-miscible ketone having a freezing point of - 40 DEG C. or lower and which is present in an amount only slightly in excess of that required to absorb substantially all the water condensed by said cooling, draining off the solution so formed and then absorbing the acetylene from the gas mixture by excess liquid ketone at the same or a further reduced temperature. Ketones specified include acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, and diethyl ketone. A preliminary partial drying may be effected by cooling to a temperature slightly above 0 DEG C. The acetylene is recovered from the ketone by heating, and the ketone may be recycled for further use. A mixture of two or more ketones may be used.ALSO:Ketones-acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and diethyl ketone are used to separate acetylene from moist gas mixtures. Initially, the mixture is cooled to between 0 DEG and -40 DEG C. whence the moixture condenses and mixes with the ketone, the resulting liquid being drawn off. The amount of ketone used is only slightly in excess of that required to absorb all the water. Finally, the acetylene is absorbed from the dry gas mixture by excess ketone at the same or a further reduced temperature. A mixture of two or more ketones may be used.
