Abstract
A compound of a platinum group metal is hydrolysed in aqueous solution in the presence of an anhydrous oxide of a non-precious element taken from Groups II to VIII, upon which platinum metal oxide is thereby deposited, and the latter is then reduced to metal. The preferred carrier is alumina; oxides of chromium, zirconium, iron, and silicon are also mentioned. The hydrolysable salt may be, e.g., potassium tetrachloroplatinate, the sodium salt of tetrachloropalladic acid, or rhodium chloride. The hydrolysis is effected by boiling the mixture, but except when the carrier is alumina it is desirable also to add some alkali such as sodium bicarbonate.
