Abstract
624,335. Two-part couplings. FOSTER INSTRUMENT CO., Ltd., and COOK, C. I. V. July 3, 1947, No. 17556. [Classes 38 (i) and 53] A thermocouple or resistance thermometer is provided with coupling means whereby the correct wires of the temperature-sensitive element are connected to the correct conductors in the connection head and, preferably, similar means are provided for coupling the connecting head conductors to the correct wires of the measuring circuit. The connecting head comprises an insulating base 8, Fig. 4, screwed to the lower part 29 of a casing whose upper portion 31 is hinged to form a lid, both parts 29, 31 being formed with a half-boss 33 which, when the lid is closed, grips a rubber bush 35 surrounding the conductors to the measuring circuit. The under surface of the base 8 is formed with a recess 12, Fig. 6, having a reentrant tongue 24, the recess and its tongue being adapted to mate with an insulating block 11, Fig. 7, having a slot 23 and carrying the conductors 1 forming the thermocouple. A spring-biassed pin 26 mounted on the base 8 rides into an indent 25 in the block 11 to secure the block in engagement with the base 8. The slot 23 and tongue 24 ensure that only the thermocouple element appropriate to the particular base 8 is connected and is connected in the correct manner. The upper surface of the base 8 is provided with three parallel guide ribs 19, 19, 20, Fig. 2, which form a recess 14 and a tongue 20 to receive the insulating block 13, Fig. 8, having finger grips 16 and a groove 21 and carrying the conductors of the measuring circuit. The wires 1 of the thermocouple element and the wires 7 of the measuring circuit pass as shown, vertically and horizontally respectively into the conducting connectors 9 consisting of rectangular copper or brass blocks suitably drilled and are secured in position and in positive contact with each other by screws 10. The blocks 9 are located between and partially embedded in three block-shaped lugs 17, 18, 17 extending upwardly from the insulating base 8. The various parts may be coloured to facilitate ready identification of the correct interlocking elements.
