Abstract
624,116. Spools. ROYAL TYPEWRITER CO., Inc. Nov. 27, 1946, No. 35250. Convention date, Feb. 26. [Class 120 (iii)] [Also in Group XVI] A ribbon spool S, Figs. 1 and 4, for a typewriter or like machine comprises two flanges 1, 2, a central hub structure including a plurality of spaced arms 4, 5,. 6 connecting the flanges in mutually spaced relationship, and an anchoring post 10, fast at one end with the flange 2 and extending toward the other flange 1, the other end of the post being free and exposed to receive a loop means at the end of a typewriter ribbon R, the flange 1 being formed with an opening 13 extending from its periphery inwardly to a point adjacent the post. The arms 4,5, 6 and the post 10 pass through slits in the flange 2 and are swaged over. Lugs 7 bent down from the flange 2 are engaged by driving means associated with the spool spindle to cause the spool to rotate therewith. A spring urged trigger 8 operates the ribbon reversing mechanism. The ribbon is folded back and secured by a rivet 14 to form a loop to be placed over the post 10 to secure the ribbon to the spool, this being facilitated by the opening 13. In another form, the post 10 may be integral with and bent out of the flange 2. In a further form, Fig. 9, post 10 has a wider portion 17 and a shoulder 18, and the ribbon has a loop 19 of material such as sheet matal secured to it as by a rivet 20, a piece 21 of clean paper being attached to the ribbon to prevent soiling of the operator's fingers. The loop 19 is passed over the post 10 and abuts the shoulder 18, thus correctly positioning the ribbon vertically.
