Abstract

623,778. Embossing processes. EWING, H. Jan. 21, 1947, No. 1905. [Class 100 (ii)] Textile fabrics containing a substantial pro. portion of a yarn which is thermoplastic and softened by steam, e.g. a yarn such as cellulose acetate, cellulose propionate, or ethyl cellulose, are embossed while softened by steam produced by pressing the fabric between a heated die and a firmly supported water-soaked resilient material such as felt or flannel. The 'die is heated to a temperature above 100‹ C., but less than 200‹ C., preferably between 160‹ and 180‹ C., and is formed without sharp edges arranged so that the walls and face of the die enclose angles substantially greater than 90 per cent. The whole design is raised substantially from its support, and is marked to a depth of at least 0.01 inches. The embossing may be effected by a block machine, or by rollers, and water may be supplied to the felt or flannel by capillary action or by contact with a water supply.
