Abstract
A slurry of sitosteryl acetate dibromide in glacial acetic (from 5 to 10 parts of glacial acetic acid by weight of sitosteryl acetate dibromide) is treated with chromic acid and sulphuric acid under substantially anhydrous conditions while maintaining the temperature below 20 DEG C., thereby degrading the side chain. Chromium sulphate crystallises out and may be removed, thus enabling dibromination to be effected by a small quantity of zinc dust. A detailed example is given.
