Abstract

Partially oxidized cellulose fibres having a carboxyl content of 2-23 per cent prepared, for example, according to U.S.A. Specification 2,232,990 are completely sterilized, without decomposition, by treatment with a concentrated formaldehyde water vapour mixture at a temperature of 50-80 DEG C. for 1-5 hours. Preferably animal-tissue-soluble partially oxidized cellulose fibres of 10-23 per cent carboxyl content is treated at a temperature of 70 DEG C. for 3-4 hours. To prevent condensation of formaldehyde-water vapour during sterilization, the chamber used is insulated in such a manner that the internal surfaces of the walls of the chamber can be maintained at the predetermined temperature. According to one example, gauze enclosed in glassine envelopes placed within a vacuum dessicator also containing separate containers of paraformaldehyde and water, is treated at 70 DEG C. for 2 hours under a pressure of 12mm. Hg. In another example, the envelopes are stacked in open basket-type containers in a sterilizer maintained at 75 DEG C., 38 per cent w/v formalin solution is introduced and the pressure is reduced to 27 inches of water.
