Articles are sterilized by a volatile sterilizing agent, e.g. formaldehyde, by placing them in a chamber maintained at 40‹-80‹C., subjecting them to a partial vacuum and allowing the sterilant to evaporate into the vacuum. Thereafter, the vacuum is released and subsequently recreated to remove the sterilant from the surfaces of the articles. Suitable apparatus for carrying out the process is discribed.
