Abstract

623,708. Bomb-throwers. ETABLISSEMENTS E. BRANDT. May 17, 1947, No. 13336. Convention date, July 1, 1946. [Class 92 (ii)] Relates to mortars or bomb-throwers of the kind in which the striker 9 is either locked in the projected position for automatic firing or is made movable, as shown, for controlled movement under the action of percussion mechanism. According to the invention the percussion mechanism is arranged in an independent case 7 housed in a rear extension of the breech. As shown, the case 7 is fitted with a knob 22 which when rotated causes the descent of a rod 25, the latter serving to rock a lever 26 having an arm 26b straddling a buffer knob 17 on a member 16. The knob 17 is thus forced towards the breechbody 2 first compressing a spring 19, which bears also against the striker 9, and then engaging a knob 9b of the striker so that the latter is moved to and locked in the position for automatic firing. The parts return to the position shown under spring action when the knob 22 is moved in the reverse direction, and an extension 25b of the rod 25 indicates how the mechanism is set. Controlled percussion is effected by rotating clockwise a hand lever on a shaft 34, such movement causing a lever 33 to act on a pusher 32, thus compressing a spring 31 which bears also on a hammer 29. On continued rotation of the shaft 34 a nose 41 on it engages with and lifts a sear 36, which was previously holding the hammer, thus releasing the hammer which then drives back the member 16 against the knob 9b of the striker to effect percussion. The parts return to the position shown by the action of the spring 31 when the firing lever is released, and may be locked in that position by a member 47 which engages in a notch 42 on a member secured to the shaft 34 when a control knob 49 is suitably rotated.
