Abstract

Solid or semi-solid polymers, copolymers or telomers of ethylene are chlorinated by the action of liquid chlorine preferably in the presence of actinic light. The polymers, copolymers or telomers may be those referred to in Specifications 471,590, 497,643, 578,584, 578,992, 581,899, 583,181, 584,795 and 585,396. Low and elevated temperatures may be used with appropriate pressures. At a given temperature liquid chlorine dissolves a chlorinated polymer of specific chlorine content, the chlorine content in the dissolved chlorinated polymer being lower with increase in temperature, so that a particular chlorinated polymer can be obtained by operating at the required temperature and withdrawing the solution of the chlorinated polymer in the liquid chlorine. The process may be continuous, particularly when carried out in a long tube with several discharge openings spaced along its length. A solvent for both chlorine and the chlorinated polymer may be present, those specified being carbon tetrachloride, dichlorodifluoroethane and tetrachloroethylene. The products may be used in making films, filaments, coatings, gaskets, washers, adhesives and for water-proofing. Fillers, pigments, dyes and plasticizers may be added. Specifications 481,515 and 576,119 also are referred to.
