Abstract

A process for the decolourisation of articles in the production of which halogen-containing high molecular compounds capable of swelling in organic solvents are used comprises treating the articles in the swelled state with organic substances which liberate oxygen on heating, preferably those which have no acid reaction and do not split off acid reacting substances. Specified oxidising agents are acetyl and benzoyl peroxides and tetrahydronaphthalene hydroperoxide. Examples describe: (1) a tube of a copolymer of vinylidene chloride and methyl acrylate swelled in a solution of tetrahydronaphthalene hydroperoxide in cyclohexanone at 30 DEG C. and then left for 48 hours at 80 DEG C; (2) a polyvinyl chloride foil decolourised by benzoyl peroxide in tetrachlorethane and the resultant acid product neutralised with caustic soda.
