Abstract
623,645. Posts; crossarms. MANSON, M. W. Sept. 9, 1946, No. 27008. Convention date, Sept. 14, 1945. [Class 20(i)] To secure crossarms or other members to wooden poles, clamp elements which collectively form a cylindrical or partcylindrical assembly encircling the pole are employed, the clamp elements having pointed pins on their inner faces to penetrate the surface of the pole. A tubular cross arm 6, Fig. 1, may be welded to a saddle-piece 7 which may be welded to one clamp element 3, the other element 31 having lugs 8 to receive clamping bolts 9 passing through the crossarm, one on each side of the pole. Spikes 4, parallel to the direction in which the elements are drawn together when clamping, are provided in the clamps this disposition being stated to minimise damage to the wood, by separating the wooden fibres rather than cutting them. Lugs 14 for guys &c. may be provided. In a modification, to make use of the usual back strap 11, Fig. II, and cross arm fitting, the saddle-piece 7 is not welded to the clamp element 3, the clamp element constituting only a bearing sleeve for the saddle-piece and back-strap. The projections 4 extend through the clamp elements and have extensions 12 forming ledges to take the weight of the saddlepiece and back-strap. In a further modification the projections are formed as separate screwed spikes, which are screwed into the pole after the clamping of the crossbar, locknuts being provided.
