623,066. Transmitting-receiving systems. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. Nov. 27, 1946, No. 35197. Convention date, June 16, 1943. [Class 40 (v)] In a transmitter-receiver, a coarse-tuning control for the transmitter is provided, together with a vernier-control means comprising a gridcontrolled reactance tube, the grid bias of which is controlled by means of a potentiometer, the voltage across which is dependent upon the setting of the coarse-tuning means. The Figure shows a transmitter - receiver arrangement in which frequency-determining stage 1 controls transmitter 2. The frequencydetermining circuit 1 comprises a tuned circuit with coarse tuning control means for varying the inductance or capacity, or both. The coarse tuning means is mechanically coupled to a potentiometer 12, to supply a voltage to potentiometer 9 which varies as the setting of the coarse tuning control. A voltage from potentiometer 9 is applied as grid bias to a thermionic reactance 8 to provide a vernier control of frequency-determining circuit 1. The arrangement is such that approximately the same change of absolute frequency may be achieved by potentiometer 9, whatever the setting of the coarse tuning means. Potentiometer 9 may be used for remote control, and the arrangement is used for the purpose of varying the transmitter frequency to agree with that of a distant transmitter.
