Abstract

670,238. Automatic frequency control systems. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. April 11, 1949 [March 13, 1948], No. 7698/48. Class 38 (iv). The frequency of an oscillator is automatically controlled by a voltage applied to the frequency controlling electrode of the oscillator valve and by an adjustment of the dimensions of a resonant cavity, the arrangement being such that the power in the output of the valve is maintained at the optimum or a desired level. As shown, the frequency of klystron 2 is controlled by a voltage developed in example in response to the output from the discriminator 5 and applied to the reflector electrode, and by adjustment of the dimensions of the rhumbatron by motor 8 under the control of the circuit chain 11-16 which is responsive to the output of the mixer 3 and hence the power in the output of the klystron. The direction of rotation of the cavity controlling motor 8 is determined by the output of mixer 3. When the frequency is outside a predetermined range, the discriminator 5 provides no output and the motor 8 is connected to the search circuit 9 until when tuning falls within the range, discriminator 5 operates switch 17 to connect 8 to a stepper circuit 10 after which tuning to the desired frequency within the range is effected in steps, provision being made to reverse stepping under the control of a relay 16 and multivibrators 12, 15 after passing through the point of optimum power. In a further embodiment, as applied to a superheterodyne receiver the intermediate frequency signals derived from a mixer are applied to a discriminator circuit, the output of which is applied, through an integrating circuit to the grid of a further valve which energizes the klystron reflector electrode. In addition, the output of the mixer which is also representative of the power in the klystron, after comparison with a datum current is applied simultaneously to both the control grid of the klystron, the power output of which is regulated, and to a trigger circuit which controls the direction of rotation of the motor which adjusts the klystron resonant cavity.
