636,472. Phase modulation. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Dec. 31, 1946, No. 38160. Convention date, Jan. 18. [Class 40 (v)] For producing phase-modulated waves the square-wave output of a stabilized modulated multivibrator is differentiated and the resulting time-modulated train of pulses used to control the phase of a radio frequency wave. In one embodiment a flip-flop multivibrator 21, 22 is triggered by pulses, from a crystalcontrolled pulse generator, applied to the grid of valve 21 through condenser 35. The modulation voltage from source 40 is applied through condenser 36 and inductance 37 to the grid of valve 22. The square wave output from the anode of valve 21 has its negative-going edges modulated in time, and is differentiated in circuit 19. The resultant unmodulated positive pulses are clipped off and the modulated negative pulse train inverted and fed to a class C amplifier with a resonant anode circuit tuned to the pulse recurrence frequency. A phase modulated sine wave output results which may be frequency multiplied to produce the desired frequency for radiation. In another embodiment a synchronized free-running multivibrator is used and the inter-valve couplings are dimensioned as to cause operation to take place on a short straight portion of the discharge characteristic of the condenser which determines the modulation characteristic which is thus rendered linear.
