Abstract
639,254. Pulse modutation; phase modulation. PATELHOLD PATENTVERWERTUNGS- & ELECTROHOLDING AKT.-GES. Nov. 25, 1946, No. 34946. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1945. [Class 40 (v)] Duration modulated pulses are produced by mixing two phase modulated sets of oscillations and'subsequent shaping. The oscillations may be sinusoidal, rectangular, or trapezoidal in waveform. The output of a constant frequency oscillator G is divided between phase modulators P1, P2, a network K in the lead to modulator P1 effecting a fixed phase-shift of 90 degrees. Signals applied to an amplifier V phase modulate the oscillation by means of current variable iron-cored anode reactances which are connected so that the phase-shift in P1 is in opposition to that in P2. Harmonics arising from the modulation are suppressed by filters. Amplitude limiters B1, B2 are used to produce approximately rectangular pulses which are then multiplied together by a mixer M. The resultant duration modulated pulses are used to key an H.F. oscillator (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 11 (not shown), the outputs of the two modulator valves are multiplied together by a balanced ring type rectifier modulator before passing to a pentode limiter and two diode limiters. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also disclosed that two phase-modulated pulses may be added together instead of being multiplied. This subject - matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
