Abstract
515,106. Modulating systems. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. May 24, 1938, No. 15395. Convention date, June 26, 1937. [Class 40 (v)] Amplitude or combined phase and amplitude modulation of wave energy from a source H.F. with partial or complete suppression of the carrier is obtained by means of a balanced circuit L2, Z1, Z2. The valve V1 which feeds the output circuit L3 has its grid circuit connected between the junction point of impedances Z1 and Z2 and ground. The centre point of inductance L2 is connected to ground through a choke X and a source of anode current B3 for the modulator valves V2, V3, which balance the two sides of circuit L2, Z1, Z2, with respect to ground when no modulation is applied, no voltage then appearing across impedance Z3 in the grid circuit of V1. Modulating potentials from source AF are applied in opposite phase to the grids of valves V2, V3, and unbalance the circuit L2, Z1, Z2, with the result that modulation products with the carrier frequency reduced or suppressed are impressed on the grid of tube V1. If the similar impedances Z1, Z2 are replaced by dissimilar impedances a phase shift of the wave energy supplied by each branch to the grid of V1 with respect to the wave energy from H.F. occurs and phase as well as amplitude modulation is produced.
