Abstract
357,479. Wireless transmitting systems. TELEFUNKEN GES. FUR DRAHTLOSE TELEGRAPHIE, 12, Hallesches Ufer, Berlin. April 24, 1931, No. 12197. Convention date, April 28, 1930. [Class 40 (v).] In a modulation system for high-frequency signalling, a single sideband with or without the addition of the carrier wave, is produced by combining the outputs of an amplitude-modulation stage and a phase-modulation stage. As shown in the Figure, amplitude modulation is effected in a valve 3, to the grid circuit of which the modulating voltage is applied through a transformer T1, and the carrier voltage through a coupling T2, from a source O. Phase modulation is effected by applying the carrier-wave in phase quadrature to the grids of back-to-back valves 1, 2, and by applying the modulating voltage in push-pull relation to the same grids. The output is combined by the couplings K1, K2, and one or the other sideband is obtained according to the sense of the couplings K1, K2. The Specification includes a mathematical explanation of the system and shows that when the modulating voltages applied at T, T1 are in phase quadrature, one of the sidebands appearing at K1, K2 is accompanied by an unmodulated carrier.
