Abstract

622,918. Friction drives. SOC. D'APPLICATIONS GENERALES D'ELECTRICITE ET DE MECANIQUE SAGEM. July 28, 1945, No. 19370. Convention date, Dec. 26, 1944. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a drive system wherein a single electric motor 1, the speed of which may vary, drives a number of load shafts, in some e.g. 4, of which the speed variations of the motor can be tolerated whilst in others e.g. 17, 18 the speed must be held rigorously constant, the former are driven directly (or through fixed-ratio gearing 2) whilst the latter are driven through a frictioncoupling 8 and are subject to a governorcontrolled friction brake 21, which increases the resistance and so causes increased slip in the coupling 8 when the speed exceeds the required constant speed, the motor driving the coupling 8 always at a greater speed than the required speed. The coupling comprises driven discs 10, 11, pressed by a spring 9 to grip between them a driving disc 8. The governor-brake is isochronous or nearly so, and comprises centrifugal masses 28, 29 and 30, 31 on pivoted arms 22, 23 opposed by a spring 32 and serving to move axially a brake-disc 42 in relation to a spring-pressed brake-pad 43, thus varying brake-pressure and so frictional resistance. Speed may be varied by adjusting the brake-spring 44 and isochronism by varying the relative proportions of the masses 28, 29.
