Abstract
576,797. Transmitting mechanical power. MILES AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and HEAL, L. C. April 19, 1944, No. 7277. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Groups XXXIII and XXXVII] An electric motor drive preferably for use in aircraft consists of independently connected motors 1, 2 one of which is a "master," operating through a common differential gear 3. The closing of a main switch starts both motors and simultaneously releases a solenoid actuated brake in series with the windings of each motor When the master motor reaches a certain speed a centrifugal or other switch breaks the circuit of the other motor the rotor of which is then locked by the brake thus permitting the drive to be transmitted by the gear to a shaft 4. Upon the master motor failing the centrifugal switch closes the other motor circuit whereby its brake is released to allow the. motor to operate.
