Abstract

621,645. Pulp mills. MORDEN, C. W. Feb. 19, 1947, No. 4912. [Class 59] A pulp-treating and refining machine comprises a conically-shaped rotor having an exterior attritioning surface, a non- rotating shell having an interior attritioning surface surrounding the rotor, and a semi-floating mounting for the shell adapted to permit some self-alignment of the attritioning surface of the shell with respect to the attritioning surface of the rotor in their operating relationship. A hollow conical rotor R with exterior attritioning bars 27 is surrounded by a stator shell S having interior attritioning bars 32 which co-operate with, and may be slightly oblique to, the bars 27. The shell S has a pair of diametrically opposite side arms 41, 42, Figs. 2, 3, which are attached to shoe elements 45, 46, respectively, and resiliently mounted shafts 43, 44. These shoes 45, 46 are loosely fitted in side chambers 47, 48, of the outer casing 10, which are slightly larger in section than the shoes so as to allow the shell S a certain amount of lateral play. The shell S is adjustable longitudinally by worm gears on the shafts 43, 44. Two methods of treatment which may be used with the machine are described, the first, which is more of a " hydrating " treatment, is described with reference to Fig. 1. The material to be treated is fed from an inlet 57 to a chamber 54 whence it passes through the small diameter end of the rotor, through the interior thereof and then back between the attritioning surfaces to a chamber 34, and then out through a chamber 55 into a valve controlled outlet pipe 72 (not shown). The second method, which is stated to be a " refining " treatment and to be particularly suitable for coarse material or long rough fibres, is described with reference to Fig. 11. In this case, material from the inlet 57 passes through the chamber 54, the small end inlet to the interior of the rotor being closed, through a now opened valve port into the chamber 55, the outlet pipe 72 therefrom being closed, then through the chamber 34, between the attrition surfaces and out through a chamber 35B and a valve controlled outlet 36. In the first method the closed outlet pipe 36 re-collects "tramp" metal and other foreign bodies.
